Once at the back of my house there is a small variety of coconut that has just been planted. Among the other coconut trees this one is one a kind because it is all in mini-size of everything; much shorter trunk, less wider leaves, and the most important is that the coconuts themselves are much smaller, with husks less thicker than other coconut varieties.
Me and sukri we discover that this kind of coconut is just grand to us. Just grand. We don’t have to take to the poles because the tree is not that high, and we only have to chop the coconuts’ butt only once because the coconuts are way smaller. The water and the pulp inside might be less, yes, but still it is practical. Try compare a hi-fi with an ipod mini colour screen. Just grand.
So one afternoon we’d grab machetes, each one for one of us and we enjoyed ourselves with them mini coconuts. In just a couple of minutes we finished the entire bunch of coconuts from one of the main stem (tandan). It is just too enjoyable to be true for us, grab a coconut with a hand, pull it, squat down and chop the butt once with the machete, drink the water in one or at most two gulps, chop the coconut into two, and scratch away the pulp. Fling away the coconut into a nearby dumpsite, get up and grab another coconut with a hand, pull it and it goes and on with such ease. Chop chop.
The next day we do the same thing again only to a new main stem. An elderly saw us enjoyed ourselves so much with so many coconuts she says we shouldn’t drink so much of coconut water, that we’re guys, that it’d make us weak. We don’t care because why would we care about infertility or erectile dysfunction or even weak on the knees yet because we’re young and we think while we’re at it we might as well keep on keeping it on with the coconut raid. I haven't gottten myself so weak on the knees over any girl yet so far too so why bother ha ha.
There are still some more young coconuts still left on the tree so the day after we spend the whole afternoon doing massive clearing project on them poor coconuts. Our bellies are so full with the coconut water at some point we no longer drink the water, instead just go for the pulp and just pour the water on the ground. If starving people of Africa see us doing this they might as well kill us for wasting such a precious tropical resource but there aren’t any starving African kids, there’s just two Malaysian kids crazy over mini coconuts.
The dump site is so covered with empty coconut people might think that there has been some kind of a ghost preying on young small coconuts. I don’t know why malay people are always like that, having ghost relying themselves on specific this or that, mambang tanah or mambang kuali, but I don’t care as long as there’s young coconuts to be preyed on.
When there’s no more coconut on the tree we try to get away from the place but our bellies are so full of water and pulp of the coconut is so hard to walk. Thank god we’re human not something else. If not I might as well move like a snail, use my bellies to cover the grounds.
Because we’ve already cleared the tree of any young coconuts even though we come everyday to see if there’s any good coconuts ready for chop chop chopping there aren’t any for a long time. But there’s only coconut buds and we’ve got to wait for days and when they’re old enough we’d chop them off so bad and it’s like that everytime, chop them off from the tree so bad that the tree is so wounded at its top part, the part where it has the most soft tissues.
But when there’s exposed soft tissues of the tree it would invite ants and small insects to prey on the liquid excreted from the wounded xylem, and that would actually bring sickness to the tree. When there’s exposed nutrient source it is bad enough with the insects, but then would come moulds and bacteria and everything to take advantage of the nutrition galore. And all the pests would come in very high numbers too, bringing their ilk and kin and infest the tree and finally get the tree so sick. Each day we wondered why the leaves are dying even the younger ones and before we know it the tree dies, our beloved mini coconut tree, because of our own hands.
And that’s the story how you could actually kill a coconut tree slowly out of your lust for worldly pleasure ha ha. From then on there’s no more mini coconuts get planted anywhere near our places because people know what we do to them, young cuddly mini coconuts.
